Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Library are an active group of volunteers with over 800 members. The mission of the Friends is to provide support for the services and programs of the Livonia Public Library. Volunteers meet this mission by helping at Library programs, events and fund raising efforts.

Funds are raised by the Friends in three ways:
- Membership dues
- The Friends Used Book Store
- The Used Book Sales
Although membership dues are nominal, the benefits achieved are immeasurable. To encourage more individuals and families to join, dues have not increased much since the Friends incorporated in 1978. Annual membership dues:
- Individual $5
- Family, Club or $10
- Sustaining, Business or Professional $25
- Life dues: $100

The Friends hold their used book sales three times a year -- usually in February, May and October. Materials for the sale are donated by area residents, along with some items that have been withdrawn from the library's collections. The Friends hold weekly sorting sessions to handle donations throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to work at the three-day sales to keep the tables in order, bag purchases and work the cash registers.
It is the ready smiles of the volunteers that bring people back regularly to the sales. To sign up for a two or three hour shift, just send your name, address, and phone number to the Friends’ address above. The Book Sale Coordinator will call you!Online Book Sales
Among the wonderful donations received from the community, there are a few that are deemed extra special, with a determined minimum value of at least thirty dollars. We have been successful in putting them online and making sales all over the country. However, we would like to make these “jewels” available to local residents. We keep these books at the Civic Center Library and if you would be interested in making an appointment to see them (or having a list provided), please contact Mary Spongberg at 734-464-9556 orThe Friends Used Book Store
The Used Book Store is a fund raising effort staffed by volunteers. The Used Book Store is a new venture started by the Friends in June 2006 in order to provide ongoing sale of items donated to the library. Book Store hours are: Tuesday and Wednesday 11am to 8pm Saturday 11am to 3pm Book Store phone: (734) 466-2495 To work in the shop, send a note to the Friends address above, Attention: Gift Shop Manager. Provide a phone number so that the volunteers can answer your questions, schedule training and begin adding you to their shop schedule. Of course, you could just stop in at the shop and do that, too!
